There is inherent risk in bringing something new into being. The very nature and definition of creativity, as well as the starting point for any new creation in our lives, is risk.
If you're not taking any creative risks or have created a life at work and at home that is so safe and secure that you're feeling suffocated, then an investigation into the unfulfilled dreams of your past may be exactly what's called for at this time. As painful as it may be to go back in time to think about your unrealized goals, the rewards of inspired insights are likely waiting for you.
When goals or dreams are not accomplished, many of us move on with our lives by making the most of what we do have, and resolve that "it just wasn't meant to be". Over time, we can forget about these losses without even having grieved them. But if the wounds from the losses are simply looked over instead of healed over, they can come back on us with an even greater loss-the loss that arises from resisting to set new dreams and goals.
It's an easy trap to fall into. After all, if we don't set new dreams, then we can't fail. Or so we may think. The unlived life may very well be the greatest loss we ever experience. And in the corporate world of today's innovative environment, not taking creative risks is one of the quickest ways to get left behind.
Can any of your former dreams be dusted off or changed in such a way that inspires you to want to give it another shot? Take on the risk and ask yourself, "If I knew I couldn't possibly fail, what would I try? What itsy-bitsy step could I take toward jumping into that dream in the next 24 hours?" Great, now take that little step!
